MUMBAI: There is room at the top for young and hopefuls in the AV Birla group. At least that was the signal group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla sent out on Tuesday when he announced significant changes on the board of the Aditya Birla Management Corporation (ABMC), think-tank to the group. Members of this group provide a strategic direction to other companies in the group's fold.
More importantly, the changes re-emphasises the group's commitment to the textile business. In the recent past, there was some speculation in the market that the group's textiles business was on the block. The stories were vehemently denied by the management then. The current set of changes include the induction of two new directors - Vikram Rao (54) and KK Maheshwari (49).
Until very recently, Rao used to report to Sanjeev Aga, the managing director of Aditya Birla Nuvo. He was roped in from Arvind Mills as group executive president of the fabric business. He was instrumental in the Birla's acquisition of Madura Garments. Over the years, he played a significant role in consolidating and growing the garments business, product development and forging partnerships with retail chains across the country. Under the new dispensation, he also has additional responsibility of Jay Shree Textiles and Vikram Woolens.
As for Maheshwari, he will be responsible for the groups trading business. He is currently the the global head of the chemicals business. After joining the company in 1984, he worked on various restructuring engagements at the group. He also played a key role in setting up Thai Poly Phosphate and Thai Organics in Thailand. Portfolios that were reshuffled include that of SK Saboo, a veteran at the group. Given that he was due for retirement, Saboo has been appointed as group advisor reporting to the chairman. His responsibilities have now been divided between Rao, Maheshwari and PM Bajaj, all of whom will report directly to Birla.
